There not to glorify war but to remember its impact on all. The ANZAC story just just end when the war finished; my great grandfather was blinded by mustard gas and his wife and daughter spent the rest of their lives supporting him, as his health slowly failed. With the gvmt thinking of sending SAS troops to Afghanistan I feel we should be emphasising the "Never Again" aspects.

I have nothing to do with ANZAC day formally but I do remember my relatives who were killed in WWI and my Uncles who came back from WWII very changed men.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8770341086445997547.post-33212096360623459942009-04-25T11:37:00.000+12:002009-04-25T11:37:00.000+12:00Great post Anna. Disturbingly, I see a tendency among that same group to convince themselves that NZers only went to war because they were on "the side of right".

Having seen the number of people who felt we should invade Iraq with the US because they are our allies, I feel very skeptical of that claim. Our often blind nationalism in NZ leads me to wonder whether all NZers have really understood that the same desire for adventure that led many of our men to war is what led many German men to war. We were on "the side of right" last time (if there's ever a true "right side" in war) but I'm not convinced that we are utterly immune to fighting on the wrong side if the situation arose - all it would have taken in Iraq was a different government in power.Alisonnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8770341086445997547.post-54789199814471014962009-04-25T11:17:00.000+12:002009-04-25T11:17:00.000+12:00Nice post! I live next to Auckland Domain so I am writing this to the sounds of the ceremony at the Auckland War Memorial.

"I'm one of those who sporadically attend the Dawn Parade. I do it because I want my children to understand what happens when the world goes crazy, casting aside morality and sense in favour of mindless nationalism and militarism. That's the one and only lesson I'm able to draw from World War One."

The lesson I take (which may be included in the above) is how groups of us can be captured. We might not want to be nationalist or militarist but people just like us get caught and can't escape.katyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15742280289613450293noreply@blogger.com
