Quick hit: Medical abortion access likely to open up

Following on from Margaret Sparrow's piece yesterday comes news that Family Planning is going to apply to the Abortion Supervisory Committee for a licence to provide an Early Medical Abortion service.

An early medical abortion is one where a woman takes medication/pills to cause a miscarriage early in the pregnancy (a pregnancy with a gestation limit up to nine weeks). This method might be preferable for some women as it does not require people sticking surgical equipment up our private parts and it also opens up access to abortion in the provinces, something I have written about previously

I can just see though the first reported case of male force feeding female this pill in order to procure an abortion for a baby he doesn't want but she does.

You know you can see it too....much easier than punching her in the stomach like they currently would.

Um... how is this man getting the pill, again? AFAI can tell it's not going to be sold over the counter.

You can't take it away with you Cactus Kate. You'd have it there and then. In the Family Planning clinic.

Oh sorry I forgot, prescription drugs never make it into the community without prescriptions do they?

Obviously they do, Kate, but given that the pill has to be administered in the FPA office, and that - from what I can tell - several trips are needed, I think this is going to be tougher to get into the community than your average extra-strength painkiller (or whatever.)

anyway: wouldn't it be better to be forcefed one of these than to be beaten around the abdomen until miscarriage? Both result in an unwanted termination, but the second also includes internal injuries.

Great to have you here, Sarah - happy reading! :-)

PS Kate, I think it would be quite difficult for a man to get an abortion pill on prescription to force feed it to his partner.
