Quick Hit: Michelle Obama on relationship stuff

From today's Herald:
..."Cute is good. But cute only lasts for so long, and then it's, Who are you as a person?," she said. "Don't look at the bankbook or the title. Look at the heart. Look at the soul.

"When you're dating a man, you should always feel good. You shouldn't be in a relationship with somebody who doesn't make you completely happy and make you feel whole."
Click through for the whole thing.

Although my favourite bit is right at the end:
In answer to a question from Couric on how she keeps her sanity, Mrs Obama replied: "I have always tried to put my kids first, and then put myself a really close second, as opposed to fifth or seventh.

"One thing that I've learned from male role models is that they don't hesitate to invest in themselves."

Hi Julie, hey I am generally a big handmirror fan, and appreciate all the work all put into it but I do have to wonder about this post. I don't really have anything against Michelle Obama, but as for her choice of partner? I really suggest reading some excellent articles John Pilger has written about Barack Obama whom he calls a 'marketing dream.' Not sure if your aware of what is happening in Afganistan or that within weeks of his inauguration, Obama started a new war in Pakistan, causing more than a million people to flee their homes. Anyway instead of me plagirising more from Pilger I'll link to one of his articles!
Cheers, Ruth

I'm also a bit disturbed by the whole 'I need a man to make me feel whole' implication. I'm a bit disappointed that so far, Michelle Obama's role in the Whitehouse seems to be heading down the track of 'well-behaved political wife', content to let her own impressive educational and professional credentials take a back seat to those of her husband.

Thanks for the feedback - I am not an unreconstructed fan of the Obama's at all, and appreciate the links. I too had an issue with her statement about the other person making you feel whole (and usually Quick Hits are articles about things that piss me off - this one irritates in parts, but that last quote from her I thought was really good). IMHO it's when you feel whole all on your own that you are truly in the right place to be in an equal relationship with someone else!

I hate Barack Obama's imperialism in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Colombia.

However, Michelle Obama would have to be one of the sexiest women in the World. I would love to do it with her.
