Refuge needs you in 2013

It's that time of year again, when services that literally save lives have to stand on street corners asking for money, because they do not have enough to pay their staff.  It's all about priorities, you know.

While I can't wait for the day we don't have to do this, the two Refuges in Wellington (Te Whare Rokiroki Maori Women's Refuge and Wellington Women's Refuge) need help collecting.  Every year the Wellington public gives very generously to us - and part of that relies on us having lots of collectors out.

If you can give an hour or two on Friday 19th July or Saturday 20th July, email or call (04) 9390455 to book a time.

If you're not in Wellington and want to support your local Refuge, get in touch.  Many other Refuges around the country also organise Annual Appeal events including street collections.

I just want to tautoko this a bit as it is this time of year that I look at our organisations bank account balances and feel sick, and make contingency plans for if our next government contract is delayed (how long can I go without being paid? who else might be able to take leave without pay?). We'll make it through, but if the July money is held up - and some years it is - then we're going to be in a pretty tough situation. For community organisations, we're starting (?!) to feel some brutal effects of funding policy, both government and philanthropic, that has cut away at us for some time.
