The Kindness of Strangers

Every now and then someone writes something nice about The Hand Mirror and I thought it might be a good idea to keep a record of them somewhere, so that when/if the going gets tough we can remember there are people out there who like our work!

"The blogsphere continues to blossom. Fresh this week: The Hand Mirror, a group home for some of the country's best feminist bloggers, including Deborah, Stef the Ex-Expat (who has sprung into view with some tremendous posts on her own blog lately) and someone whose prose style might seem familiar. Cool." Russell Brown, on Hard News (part of Public Address), March 2008.

"... a collection of New Zealand's best female bloggers." Idiot/Savant of No Right Turn, March 2008.

"Stef and Deborah represent themselves and their experience with lucidity and clarity multiple times a week, and are collaborating with others on The Hand Mirror, whose premise shows what many of us know: that the second wave has not yet dissipated." harvestbird, at her eponymous blog, March 2008.

"I’ve only just had a proper look at it and I’ve got to say it is gold. Sort of like one of those action movies where half a dozen superheros get together to save the world. Except feminist and smarter and with a better plot-line and not a movie (I’m also pretty sure a blog can’t save the world but I don’t really want to admit that). Come to think of it that was a stupid analogy. Nonetheless
The Hand Mirror is definitely a welcome addition to the sphere and definitely a must-read." IrishBill, of The Standard, March 2008.

"The ladies at The Hand Mirror continue to be awesome and insightful. I’d like to quickly plug the ex-expat again, for her wonderful post that gives a balanced account of her experience with her father as primary parent, and her regret that his choice is marginalised in society." Ari, of Still Truckin', March 2008.

"So from viewing all these blogs I found a few that I thought were substantially under-appreciated by the masses: ...#55 The Hand Mirror - feminist bloggers... it's like listening to adults talk when you're a child hiding under the table." Tim Selwyn, as part of the NZ Blogosphere rankings for March-April 2008, May 2008.

(As at first posting, 14th June 2008)

"Recently, Brainstab has been linking to The Hand Mirror - an excellent feminism blog... I certainly read The Hand Mirror for its interesting content and debate and it rewards me with fodder for thought." T-Bird, of Strega Nona's Super Number One Mecha Party Laser Blog, June 2008.

"For sheer unadulterated wincing (at least by me) I’d recommend reading Feminist gets a wax, anaesthetises crotch with feminism at The Hand Mirror. Be warned that this is a very effective look at the art and issues of waxing. It made me resolve to never ever do it for ANY reason." Lynn Prentice (lprent), of The Standard, June 2008.

"I expect you are wondering where I have been. I'm sorry: I was kidnapped by feminists and force-fed cupcakes. These things happen.
Well almost. I did attend The Hand Mirror's Suffrage Eve Debate, where cupcakes were served. It was rad; and fem, although not rad fem." Paul of The Fundy Post, September 2008.

"P.S. Thanks for the Handmirror types for fueling my interest in all things feministy." Nikki of Tales of The Red Headed Devil Child, October 2008.

"And exexpat, who blogs at The Hand Mirror has a fabulous post about sex education, and how important it is that it happen in schools - Loose morals - let’s talk about loose assumptions."
Listed in the Sixth Downunder Feminist Carnival by penguinunearthed, November 2008.

"The Hand Mirror's election survey to a number of candidates and parties leading up to the NZ Election this Saturday. Good info to consider before you get your vote on." sas, of sas' magical mystery tour, November 2008.

"Oh and also, if you’re a New Zealander, please vote tomorrow. And please vote for a party that you think will do good things for women. The Hand Mirror has done an excellent job of asking candidates questions about issues that concern women, and they make for some important reading before you make your decision." Joanna, of Pretty Pretty Pretty, November 2008.

"With the exceptions of a very few blogs - probably for me most often the Hand Mirror - most New Zealand political blogs I read irritate me with how unashamedly one-sided they are." Sandra of Luddite Journo, November 2008.

'Dear Herald,
When No Right Turn, The Hand Mirror and Kiwiblog think your article on Bronagh Key’s wardrobe is a bit off? They’re probably right.*
...
*This is now a corollary to my previous Rule of Life, “If any three of ACT, the Greens, the Maori Party and United Future vote against something, it’s probably an objectively bad idea.” ' Queen of Thorns, of Ideologically Impure, November 2008.

"The Hand Mirror has a good round-up of reactions to Gaza from the progressive blogosphere in Gaza on our minds. I particularly like the following quote which kind of sums up how I feel..." Sharon, of A Cup of Coffee, January 2008

"Some of the best blogs and spots of political writing out there now (Hand Mirror, Pundit, PublicAddress, The Standard) are sites with more than one author. They usually share a point of view, but they have diversity within that. The dynamic interaction between authors improves the quality of everyone's writing." Jordan Carter, of Just Left, January 2009

(No comments on this post, we aren't fishing for compliments, it's just about keeping a record and I'll update it as more become apparent.)
