Trouble, the idea that men are somehow mutated/deformed women goes at least as far back as the SCUM manifesto, and probably much further. It's certainly older than that Guardian piece.
That was written before I was born and disowned by its author as satire not long after. It barely registers among influential feminist ideas, and it's an entirely legit to respond to silliness like Y chromosome envy with more silliness like anon's comment.
Even assuming for a moment that the 'mutant Y chromosome' theory has been discredited as thoroughly as you claim it has - and as I say, it's probably older than the SCUM manifesto, so the flaws of that particular document are not necessarily germane - does that necessarily make it harmless to evoke?
The idea that women are dumber than men is equally discredited, and yet I wouldn't recommend going around parroting it as harmless humour, even in a "they did it first" type situation.

it's about as sensible as penis envy, and people took that pretty seriously for a pretty long time...
I think that's actually quite funny :-)
You don't have to take it seriously.
I, for one, am totally envious of the genetic deterioration and instability men have.
The Y chromosome as genetic deterioration! Well, that didn't take long...
Can we have the one about Double Ys being unusually violent as well, just for the sake of my bingo card?
Hugh, a bloke wrote this, which is presumably the source of anonymous' sarcasm: Do we need men? - I don't know what that does for your bingo card.
You can have mine. Seriously, more trouble than it's worth...
This one is specially for Hugh's bingo card: Can't you [sensitive men] take a joke?
Ha ha Tui. Nice one.
Sad thing is some women think by changing the language to remove the "men/man" bit makes any difference.
