Family First pimp marriage

Seems that least progressive of organisations, Family First, has decided to turn its great swivelly burning eye away from the pro-smacking lobby and towards the issue of marriage. Their summer advertising campaign is going to feature the following billboard:

Apologies if it's not that large, but never fear, they are raising funds to put ginormous versions of it up all over the show (for surprisingly cheap sums of money too, hmmmm, might be something in that for a journo...)

Now coming from Family First I'm guessing that this campaign is aimed at coming up with a positive message beneath which to sell the following rather negative bits and bobs:
  • No sex before marriage
  • No non-hetero marriage
  • No non-marriage relationships with kids
  • No non-marriage relationships with state-recognition (and that's not just about the Civil Unions Act, which turns 5 shortly, but also about things like state housing, welfare provision, who can be your next of kin, etc)
  • No divorce
And they reckon the PC liberal set are the Fun Police!

Well no Julie, the PC fun police are still those on the left. You are presuming that FF support your assertions without any evidence.

Don't worry, the left will always be there to ruin the fun for us all. :)

Well Anon, I think the Family First Principles on Marriage blow your argument, scant as it is, right out of the Holy Water. With the very first being: Marriage is a union of husband and wife, intended to be permanent.

And then there's the "for the best sex, slip on one of these" (complete w pic of wedding rings) on their website, their statement that "the best environment in which to raise children is
the biological two-parent, husband-wife family," their media release on their concern that the number of children being born out of wedlock is rising, their repeated media work seeking to priviledge marriage over other forms of relationship, calling civil unions irrelevant, you know, that kind of thing.

Stuff like that from family first actually makes not want to get married. Mind you the fact that I'm shacked up with a guy with a kid from a previous marriage means I'm already violating their moralistic bullshit.

Telling people they can't have sex is taking away all the fun Anon.

So don't worry, folks like you will always be there to try (desperately but ultimately in vain) to ruin the fun for us all. *insert redundant smiley here*

Hey, they missed one out:

No non-kids marriage. Because, after all, isn't that what marriage is for? C'mon FF, discriminate against me too!

What a joyless existence these people must live. Narrow rules, narrow mind.

PS: I watched the Intelligence Squared Debate yesterday, where Christopher Hitchins and Stephen Fry took on the Catholic Church ("The Catholic Church is a force for good in the world").

Mr Fry summed it up nicely: those in the church most obsessed with sex are those not getting any.

It's all so creepy. Why do they care so much about what people are doing in their bedrooms?

Boganette: In all the time I've been reading about abortion, gay marriage, gay adoption, moralistic assertions etc I've come to a very simple conclusion...and I'm seriously startled by how simple it is...

People Are Busybodies.

Not content with being the best person they can, they have to stick their nose into other people's business, to remake them in their image.

Hmmmm, man made god in his image...hu-man wants to make humanity in his image.

I created a link to this post on Facebook with the following comment:

Family First imply that those outside of their narrow definition of 'family' render family 'last'. Join my party ... 'Family Fourth' ... if you are into hierarchies as a way of life.

cheers,

At least four of my married friends-or-relations have split up in the last year. I think I'm safest to keep living happily in sin.

And if that ad is representative, 'proper families' are also all white and middle-to-upper class.

And Boganette/A Nonny Moose - as a historian, I can tell you that people's personal sexual behaviour - particularly anything that can be termed as dangerous or deviant - always becomes a battle line whenever conservative political forces feel themselves threatened by 'radical' opponents.

Oh frick! Went to have my morning ciggie and there's a massive billboard outside my work! Not a good start to the day! McCroskie is messing with my morning mojo.

Maybe we should make our own party...called "Love and Empathy First".

Sounds very 60s Hippy.

*sticks flowers in hair*

Yeah, what ever happened to the free love of the 60s, man...
