What: Public lecture by Mariem Hassan: Voice of the Sahara
When: Tuesday, March 9, 7.30pm,
Where: Auckland University Library Basement B10 (on Alfred St, City Campus)
Message from the organisers:
Learn about the conflict in Western Sahara and the independence struggle of the Saharawi people through the life of Mariem Hassan. After more than 30 years of performing, Mariem is hailed as the true voice of the Western Sahara. Her people are Saharawis, living in exile within Algeria since Spain abandoned the Western Sahara in 1975 and their desert lands were claimed by Morocco. Within the Algerian refugee camps, women singers are recognized as pillars of strength, humanizing the harsh living conditions through their powerful songs of hope. Come along to learn more about the conflict, as well as watch a documentary on Mariem with a chance to ask her questions about her life and country afterwards. Hosted by the Auckland University Students Association.
