International Women's Day events

Monday March 8th is International Women's Day, and there's all sorts of stuff coming up in Aotearoa New Zealand over the next week or so. Here's what we've heard about so far, in date order:

Dunedin - Public lecture on how medical care can help lives shattered by sexual violence - 12.45pm - 2pm on Thursday 4th March, at the Hunter Centre, Room G30 A&B, Ground Floor, Division of Health Sciences, Otago University. More info here.

Manukau - IWD Breakfast - from 7.45am on Saturday 6th March, Salvation Army Centre, Bakerfield Pl, Manukau City. Keynote speaker is Sue Bradford. Please come in your national costume. RSVPs and pre-paying for tickets ($15 each) essential. Organised by the Manukau branch of the National Council of Women, contact Laurice on ph 250 4646 or email manukauncw@clear dot net dot nz. Christchurch - UniFem Breakfast - from 7pm to 8.30am on the 8th March, at the Grand Chancellor Hotel. Speaker Dr Jan Pryor of the Families Commission. Email: bturland at xtra.co.nz for more info.

Auckland - Nibbles and speakers - 12pm - 1pm on the 8th March, Gold Lecture Theatre, The Hub, Unitec, Mt Albert. Organised by Unitec Women's Advisory Committee, more info here.

Victoria's main campus, Wellington
- Picnic - 12.30pm to 1.30pm on the 8th March, Hunter Lawn. Facebook event. Message from the organisers:
... open to all supporters of the feminist cause. It is also the first meeting of the 2010 VUWSA Women's Group to welcome all new and returning members to our fantastic little representative group.

You don't have to turn up at 12:30 on the dot to be fed, but the earlier you get there the better the selection.

Auckland - Flashmob against domestic violence - 5.30pm on the 8th March, meet cnr K Rd and Ponsonby Rd near the Mobil petrol station. Wear a white or pale t-shirt please. Message from organisers, Auckland Women's Centre:
On Monday we will be drawing attention to the fact that one in three women in New Zealand experience domestic violence, that’s one in three too many!

We will be calling on the Government to do a better job of protecting New Zealand women from domestic violence.

Women need
• Free Protection Orders
• Advocates in the court system
• Breaches of Protection Order resulting in arrest
• Recognition at all levels of the damaging effects of psychological abuse
Christchurch - Pizza plus speakers - 6.30pm on 8th March, at Filadelfio's Pizza, 150 Colombo St. Featuring Anne Hercus, Lianne Dalziel and Erin Ebborn-Gillespie. $5 a ticket, numbers limited so book through Jasmin; a Labour Party Red Hearts event; read more here.

Waitakere
- Celebration dinner - 7pm, on 8th March, at the Croatian Centre, 161 McLeod Dr, Henderson. Featuring Alice Worsley, Tina Cross, Vinka Lucas and a Croatian folklore ensemble. Organised by the Croatian Women's League, tickets $40, click here for more info.

(Incidentally a very brief study of the Merchant of Venice was one of my motivators several years later for going to law school, Portia was so cool, sadly law school was not and I hated it!)
