Happy New Year

We would like to invite you to the first meeting of the Roundtable on Violence Against Women for 2009.

We encourage anyone who is interested in working to end violence against women to attend.

At this meeting we will be deciding actions/projects for the first part of the year, and forming working groups to progress these.

Some ideas that have come from our launch and previous meetings are:

1 -A project to highlight the injustices faced by women who have experienced violence as they go through the family and criminal court system – one suggested action is to organise ‘hearings’ where women can tell their stories or give a testimony about the institutional violence they experienced, or the lack of justice (we have more information about how this has worked in the US and will talk about this on the night)

2 - An awareness raising and media campaign about the levels of violence experienced by women in NZ and ideas about what people can do to stop violence against women (or focus on one aspect of violence that has a low profile such as stalking or dating violence - use Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to get our message out?)

3- Taking a list of priority actions around ending violence towards women to parliamentarians (some people to meet one-on-one with MPs to provide information about the issue)

4 - Follow up on recommendations made in NZ about addressing violence against women that come from CEDAW, Sexual violence taskforce, family violence taskforce, the Hearing on violence against women and children in 2005 etc – collate and monitor all the promises, and decide where we might need to take action on priorities

ALSO:
• Submissions due for Domestic Violence Bill
• An international human rights report on partner abuse in New Zealand is
due for release in March (we want to organise a forum for this)
• And more!

Please come along and get involved!

Thurs 12th Feb 5.30-7.30pm at meeting room 1 Centre for Global Action, 2nd level James Smith Building

Thank you.

If you have any questions, please respond to this email.

Feel free to pass this on to others who may be interested.

If you are keen to be involved but can’t make the meeting please let us know and we’ll keep you in the loop!
