MCP Watch: Murray Webb makes a fat funny

I'm no fan of Judith Collins. She's in the top five on my Least Favourite MPs list. But she doesn't deserve this from Murray Webb on Stuff this morning:

I've been looking at the cartoons for a couple of weeks now, for anything interesting for The Hand Mirror, and the vast majority on both the Herald and Stuff websites have not featured women at all. Finally we get one, but it's this. Sometimes I despair.

I thought that cartoon is pretty satirical, if the minister of police was a overweight man and the cartoonist had done the same cartoon would you have a problem with it?

Yes. It would still be a lame, unfunny cartoon exhibiting almost zero creativity and taking a cheap shot.

"lol your fat"

how original. how politically astute. i've seen more complex satire drawn by children.

Yeah, I'm with Tidge. Caricaturists always exaggerate physical features, so you're never obese but morbidly obese, never big-nosed but huge-nosed, etc. That's fine. But you'd better be making some actual point there too, otherwise it reflects more on yourself than on the subject.

Before posting this I considered how I would feel if it was Gerry Brownlee, and decided it would still be uncool.

Isn't that the same face he draws for Graham Henry?

I can see some similarity with his most recent cartoon of Graham Henry but both of their faces are still easily recognisable.

When have Murray Webb's cartoons ever had anything to say? If the guy ever has a point to make, I've missed it.

Admittedly given the axes some of our editorial cartoonists are grinding, that might be a good thing.
