Message from the organisers (cribbed from the media statement):
People from around Aotearoa will converge on Wellington this Easter to discuss decolonisation, racism and challenging white privilege in Aotearoa. This will be the 3rd such hui in as many years, and forms part of an ongoing tradition of more than 19 years of Anarcha-Feminist organising in this country.

“...Anarcha-Feminism is a political philosophy opposed to all all kinds of domination and oppression. The movement in Aotearoa has not seriously explored the issues of racism and colonisation, and we see this hui as an opportunity to begin to change that.” said Laura Drew, one of the organisers.

Added Drew, “There is a need to acknowledge and address racism in Aotearoa and the way its effects are often down-played in the media and by the Pakeha majority.”

There will also be workshops on topics such as body image, mental health and ableism, and time for socialising and networking.

“This hui is for transgender people and women, as we recognise that both groups are adversely affected by patriarchal societies, and therefore can share experiences and strategies. We recognise that men have a role to play in fighting sexism too, and encourage men to organise an event focusing on these topics.” Drew said.

Organisers want to make the hui as accessible as possible, so have kept the cost of attendance low. Admittance, all food and accommodation is only $30-$60 sliding scale for the whole 4 day event. The venue is wheelchair accesible and free childcare will be provided throughout.

Feminist Event: Auckland anarcha-feminists film screening on Sunday

This Sunday, 8th of March is International Womyn's Day. Auckland Anarcha-feminists are putting on a film screening to fundraise for the upcoming national anarcha-feminist hui. There'll be games and cupcakes after!

Feminist Event: Anarcha-Feminist self-defence hui

A 2-day workshop about Womyn’s Self Defence and Self Defence from State Oppression will take place in Wellington on the last weekend of November.

The first day will be dedicated to learning to define our personal space and boundaries, helping each other keep safe, and physically and mentally defending ourselves.

The second day will be dedicated to exploring the different ways we can defend ourselves from the State and its various ways of attacking and oppressing us as activists.

Come and kick Patriarchy and the State’s ass, while enjoying other wimmin’s company in a safe, stimulating and fun environment.

New men's anarchist zine - From The Kitchen

Now you might be wondering why I'm mentioning a men's mag on a feminist blog, but kindly read the following message from the organisers of the zine...

From The Kitchen: Issue one of Aotearoa anarchist men's zine now out!

In what is perhaps a first for Aotearoa Pakeha anarchists (please let us know if that isn't the case) 'From the Kitchen' is a zine devoted to the discussion of anarchist mens relationship/ response to the feminist movement(s) and our own sexist behaviour. The zine isn't about pointing fingers but instead is done in the style of critical self-reflection by the authors about sexism in their own lives.

Topics in the first issue include:

• Me(n) and Pornography
• Slugs in the Sandpit - The Gendered politics of the garden
• Meat Robots Unite
• Some thoughts on masculinity, authoritarianism and emotional intelligence
• What is to be done- some reflections on current sexism in the anarchist movement.

If you want to get you hands on a copy (I know you do!) then try the Freedom Shop in Te Whanganui-a- Tara/Wellington, Cherry Bomb Comics in Tamaki-makau- rau/Auckland, Black Star Books in Otepoti/Dunedin, or if you are outside of the main centres then through Katipo Books. Feminist Events: Aotearoa Anarcha-Feminist Gathering

An anarcha-feminist gathering will take place in Otautahi / Christchurch over ANZAC weekend.

Dates: Friday 25 April – noon Sunday 27 April 2008 (ANZAC weekend)

Starts at 10am on Friday. The programme goes til noon on Sunday (for those who need to leave) but we will stay to 4pm (for those who can) to fit in all the bits that no doubt spill over, and cleanup.

Venue: The Old Vicarage, 8 Governor's Bay-Teddington Road, Governor's Bay (On Banks Peninsula, 30 mins drive from central Otautahi / Christchurch). We will be surrounded by gardens, with hills all around and a view of the sea. Close to a very lovely swimming beach
